About Russian

The Russian language belongs to the East *Slavonic family. It is a highly inflected language with six cases and a notable feature is the frequency of clusters of consonants. It is written in the **Cyrillic alphabet and the standard form is based on the dialect of Moscow.

*Slavonic languages are native to East Europe and North West Asia.

**The Cyrillic alphabet developed from a Greek alphabet of the 9th century AD in the course of Greek missionary work. It originally consisted of 43 letters, but modern versions have reduced this number to about 30.

Is Russian difficult to learn?

Our Rating: *** * = Easy  **** = Very difficult
Explanation: The inflections and multiple consonants are alien to native English speakers and so hard to grasp.
Watch out for: There are 33 letters in the Russian alphabet. Some are like the English ones - but some are not!

About Moscow

The Russian emperors, or tsars, made Moscow their base of rule until 1712, when the capital was moved to Saint Petersburg.

Moscow (Russian Moskva), capital and largest city of Russia, capital of Moscow Oblast, and the country's leading political, cultural, economic, and transportation centre.

Moscow lies on the Moscow River in the west central European part of Russia.

Moscow was restored as Russia's capital in 1918, and it served as the capital of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) from 1922 until 1991. Moscow has a continental climate, with long, cold winters and short, mild summers. Average annual precipitation is 581 mm (23 in), much of it falling in the winter as heavy snow.
